Mary Benich McCleary passed on June 28, 2007. She was 94 years of age, having been born on August 14, 1912 in Tollerburg , Colorado. She was a resident of Morgan City since 1964. Mary was a member of The Catholic Daughters of America. She attended Sacred Heart Catholic Church for many years.
Mary loved to cook for her family and friends; whom she loved very much. She was a faithful member of the Catholic Church. Mary is remembered for always doing for others before herself; she was a truly unselfish person. In addition, Mary loved to travel as much as possible. She visited numerous cities around the world. Her favorite place to visit was her hometown of Trinidad, Colorado. Mary was the last Known survivor of the Ludlow Massacre, a mass execution of miners in southern Colorado in 1914.
She is survived by her four children, Bridget M. Arcemont and her husband, Murphy, of Morgan City, James “Pat” McCleary and his wife, Barbara, of Morgan City, Karen M Adams and her husband, Bobby, of Lafayette, Stephen McCleary and his wife Elizabeth “Liz” of Patterson; 12 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren. One sister, Frances B. Johnson, of Farmington, New Mexico, also survives her.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Abner “Mac” Frederick McCleary; her parents, John and Dominika “Minnie” Benich; four sisters and six brothers.
She was a beloved wife, mother and grandmother, and will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Morgan City, Saturday, June 30, 2007 at 12:00 Noon. Visitation will be from 10am until service time at Sacred Heart Church. The Catholic Daughters of America will hold a Rosary at 9:30am. Mary McCleary will be laid to rest in the Morgan City Cemetery.
