Milford Woodrow Lay, Jr. passed away Thursday, March 28. He was a native of Magnolia, AR and a long-time resident of Patterson, LA.
Milford was dedicated to his community and gave his time to many causes and organizations. He was a board member of the Atchafalaya Chapter of the A.P.I., a former president and board member of the Petroleum Club of Morgan City, and a past king of the Louisiana Shrimp and Petroleum Festival. He grew up in the oil field and that business became his life’s work and passion. He was the owner of Drill String Services, Inc. in Amelia, LA and treated his employees as his family.
He is survived by his wife Mary Ann Gill Lay; his children, Milford W. “Trip” Lay, III, and his wife Dawn of Lafayette, LA and his daughter Melinda Lay Morton, and her husband Phillip of Fairhope, AL; his grandchildren, Jordan Marie Lay, Ross James Lay and Hannah Claire Lay all of Lafayette, LA; his brothers, Robert Alan Lay, Sr., and his wife Anne of Morgan City, LA and William Brooks Lay, and his wife Carolyn of Lafayette, LA. Also, three nieces, Alita Gill Caporotta, Carla Gill White and Kristin Gill Cantwell and his nephew, Robert Alan Lay, Jr.
He was preceded in death by his parents Milford Lay, Sr. and Gloria Johnston Lay and his brother-in-law Eugene L. Gill.
Funeral services were held Monday, March 31, 2008 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Patterson, LA with burial in the St. Joseph’s cemetery. Monseigneur Richard Green officiated.
Pall bearers were Alan Lay, Jaret Rentrop, Leon Gros, Jeffery Day, Burt Adams, Gerald Courville, David Alwell, and Kirby Arceneaux. Honorary pall bearers were Wiley McGee, Norman Hymel, B.A. “Red” Adams, Dr. W.H. Johnson, Dr. Francis Metz, Sr., Kenneth King, Hal Bettis, and Ted Waguespack.
