Royal A. Mayon, age 87, a native and resident of Morgan City, La. passed away Wednesday morning April 16, 2008. Mr. Mayon was the CO-owner of Mayon Brothers Service Station for thirty years. He was a decorated World War II veteran, serving with the Sixth Armored Division in Europe. He was a member of the American Legion and VFW. He was an all-state high school football and baseball player and a starting running back for Tulane University. He was a Golden Gloves middleweight boxing champion who once fought on the same card with Joe Louis, heavyweight champion of the world. He and Wanda enjoyed traveling around the country and attended many Sixth Armored Division reunions.
Mr. Mayon is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 50 years Wanda R. Mayon, son John C. Dykes, and wife Jackie, daughter Linda M. Heno, and husband Harold. He is also survived by seven grandchildren: Jeremy Dykes, Taryn Dykes, Harold Heno, III, Sharon Heno, Dereck Sealy, Lance Rollins, and Brock Rollins; three great grandchildren: Paityn Dykes, Elenore Heno and Marilyn Heno. He is also survived by his brother Earl Mayon and sister Mazie Wilson.
He was preceded in death by his parents Viola and Lenes Mayon and daughter Annie Lou Dykes.
Visitation will be at Holy Cross Catholic Church Friday April 18, 2008 from 9:00am until 11:00 am. A Mass of Christian Burial will commence at 11:00am with Father Danny Poche officiating. Royal will be laid to rest in Morgan City Cemetery.
