Fannie Hobbs

May 5, 1930 — December 16, 2008

After losing her daughter less than one year ago to cancer, Fannie Theodore Hobbs lost her short but courageous battle with cancer and passed away peacefully Tuesday, December 16, 2008, surrounded by her children. She was 78 years young. Fannie was born on May 5, 1930, in Corpus Christi, Texas. Fannie was very active in the community and never let a day go by that she didn’t try to make life better for someone else, or do a good deed for someone. Aside from her caring nature, she was a woman of many talents, having sang with her siblings, “The Theodore Sisters,” on the radio for the Bob Hope Show, being a published poet, writer and artist. She also worked in administration in the oil field for many years, for Diamond M Services, Cactus International, and Seahorse Inc. She was a past president of Desk and Derrick Club of Morgan City and a present member of Eastern Star, Alice Chapter 5. Fannie was a former employee and active volunteer at the Morgan City Archives, Turn of the Century House, and Artists Guild Unlimited Everett Street Gallery and, most recently, an employee of the Cajun Coast Tourist Commission in Franklin. She was also a daily fixture at the Council on Aging, having lunch with her best friends. Fannie was known to many as “Mama Hobbs,” as she had many adopted children whom she loved as her own. Fannie leaves behind a son, Larry Hobbs and his wife, Brenda, of Mena, Ark.; three daughters, Linda Oakley and her husband, Jim, of Smyrna, Tenn., Julie Boyne and her husband, Ed (“Doody”), of Bayou Vista, and Helen LaFleur and her husband, Henry, of Morgan City. She also leaves a legacy of 24 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren and one great great grandchild. Fannie also is survived by two brothers, Milton Theodore and Steve Theodore of Rockport, Texas; three sisters, Sophie Sanders of Fulton, Texas, Mae Wood of Port Lavaca, Texas, and Helen Apostolina of Phoenix, Ariz. Fannie also leaves behind her favorite adopted child, Ernest Dean Polk; favorite adopted daughters, Cheryl Dugas and Pat Naquin; along with good neighbors Rodney and Tina Crews, as well as her beloved fur baby, Zues; and best friends, Inez Michel and Carol Benoit. Fannie was preceded in death by her parents, Kryiakos and Anna Theodore; her husband, Barney Hobbs; daughter, Kathy Sewell; son-in-law, Richard Sewell; a sister, Olga Kendrick; granddaughter, Kristina Collins; and great-granddaughters, Adaline Kelly and Cloud LaFleur. Visitation will be at Twin City Funeral Home in Morgan City on Friday, December 19, 2008, from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m., and again on Saturday morning, December 20, 2008, until time of service. Father Roy Mellish will perform services at the funeral home at 11 a.m. Burial will follow at the Morgan City Cemetery.
