Audrey Ann Cortez Lewis, 72, a native of Thibodaux and a resident of Morgan City, died Monday, May 2, 2016, at 2 p.m. at Teche Regional Medical Center in Morgan City.
Audrey was born June 22, 1943, to Vincent Paul and Bertha Bridget “Bea” Ledet Cortez in Thibodaux.
She attended Mt. Carmel Academy and Nicholls State University, earning a Bachelor’s degree in Education in 1965.She taught Speech and English at Morgan City High School, Franklin Junior High School and Central Catholic High School before retiring “to become a full-time Granny.”
Audrey is survived by her daughter, Jean McCorkle of Berwick; and her two grandchildren, Tiffani McCorkle of Morgan City and John McCorkle of Berwick.
Although three survive Audrey biologically, so many more were touched by her legacy.
She directed plays for Children’s Theatre for 20 years, having served as a founding board member and volunteered for Children’s Church at Holy Cross Catholic Church. She also served as a Girl Scouts leader for her daughter’s troop.
Audrey was preceded in death by her parents; and two brothers, Jerry Cortez and Stephen Cortez.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, May 4, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Twin City Funeral Home in Morgan City. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, May 5, at St. Joseph Co-Cathedral in Thibodaux. She will be buried with her parents at St. Joseph Cemetery in Thibodaux.
