Rita “Shirley” Mathis, 70, a native of Napoleonville and a resident of Bayou L’Ourse, passed away in New Iberia on Friday, July 17, 2009. Shirley was a loving mother, grandmother, sister and friend to many and will be sadly missed by all.
Shirley is survived by one son, Tim “Boodie” Mathis of Houma, her daughter, Vera Mathis of Patterson, one brother, Murphy “Buddy” Solar and his wife Judy of New Iberia, two grandchildren, Tanner Williams of Liberty, TX, and Ryan Landry of Bayou L’Ourse. Shirley is also survived by a niece, Jocelyn Edith Solar and her son Garrett of Baton Rouge, her nephew, Murphy Adam Solar and his wife Stephanie of Lake Charles. She will be sadly missed by Kimberly Heny and Lindsay Soileau of New Iberia, and caregiver, Connie Zirlott of Charenton.
Shirley was preceded in death by her husband Walter L. Mathis and her parents, Murphy and Edith Fryou Solar.
The visitation will be held Sunday, July 19, 2009 at Twin City Funeral Home from 6pm until 9pm. The visitation will resume on Monday, July 20, 2009 from 8am until 10am. The Funeral service will commence at 10am with Rev. John Smilie officiating. Shirley will be laid to rest in the St. Andrews Mausoleum.
