Eloise Gowland Rites Set
Eloise Charlotte Piton Gowland, 97, a native of New Orleans and a 53 year resident of Morgan City, died Friday, October 8, 2010, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
Eloise was a woman of deep and abiding a faith in God and was totally devoted to her husband, her children and grandchildren, who will affectionately remember her as “Grandma Weezie”.
She graduated from Sophie B. Wright in New Orleans, worked at the Singer Sewing Machine Company and Edgar Murray Supply Company until her family relocated to Morgan City in 1957, where she began working in her husband’s Accounting Practice.
Eloise was a very active and faithful parishioner of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Morgan City where she served as a teacher and as principal of the CCD program for over twenty years. She was a member of Our Lady Star of the Sea, the Come, Lord Jesus! Program, and a former member of the Krewe of Galatea. Along with her husband Bill, she was also active for many years in the Sacred Heart High School Boosters Club.
Eloise is survived by her daughter, Judy G. Edwards and husband Terry of Baton Rouge and sons, Charles L. Gowland and wife Peggy of Morgan City, Winfred W. Gowland and wife Peggy of Atlanta and Paul L. Gowland and wife Susan of New Orleans.
She is also survived by 13 grandchildren: Ann Marie G. Satter, Wesley W. Gowland, Catherine G. David, Elizabeth G. Barron, Charles L. Gowland, Jr., Joanna G. Marx, William T. Edwards, Justin M. Edwards, Win S. Gowland, John D. Gowland, Michelle G. Gibson, Melissa G. Hess, and Lelia A. Gowland. Other survivors include 20 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death were her husband Wilfred S. “Bill” Gowland Sr., her parents, Charles L. Piton and Mary H. Piton, son Wilfred S. Gowland, Jr., granddaughter, Lelia Elizabeth Gowland, brother Paul L. Piton, and sisters, Lillian P. Ahten, Helen P. Escude’ and Nathalie P. Cook.
Pallbearers will be her six grandsons.
Visitation will be Tuesday, October 12, 2010 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Twin City Funeral Home, 412 Fourth St., Morgan City, with a rosary at 7:30 p.m. Visitation will resume at 9:00 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Morgan City. Interment will follow at Hope Mausoleum, 4841 Canal Street, New Orleans, Louisiana.
