Bernie Joseph Anslum Jr.

January 10, 1941 — October 11, 2021

Bernie Joseph Anslum Jr., 80, a resident of Morgan City, passed away on Monday, October 11, 2021 at his home.

Bernie was born on January 10, 1941 in Morgan City, the son of Bernie J. Anslum Sr. and Ella Marie Hymel Anslum.

Bernie was taught at an early age how to live off the land and at the age of 8 he began commercial fishing with his father, which was a career he loved for over 70 years. He was a jack of all trades, who was a master of carpentry, building his own house, a mechanic who worked on his own boat motors and ran a family sawmill in the Atchafalaya Basin.  He had a work ethic that was second to none, always working hard to provide for his family, but loved to have fun hunting ducks, squirrels and other game in the woods he loved so much. Bernie was a loving and caring father who enjoyed every moment he was able to spend with his family, which would include trips to the boat races or Disney World. When he wasn’t working, he loved to go out dancing with the love of his life Alma and watching wrestling on tv. His home and his family were the center of his life, full of laughter and activity, and his front door was open to friends throughout the neighborhood who were treated as family.

He will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by five children, Connie Daigle and husband Earl Jr. of Bayou Vista, Betsy Rhodes and husband Kenneth of Morgan City, Billy Anslum and wife Eunice of Rosharon, Texas, Jerry Anslum of Morgan City and Susan Stephens and husband Shawn of Pass Christian, Mississippi; 11 grandchildren, Ethan, Kimber, Kara, Landon, Madison, Thomas, Jessica, Michael, Sarah, Courtney and Kate; 8 great grandchildren; two brothers, Bobby Anslum and Terry Anslum both of Morgan City; four sisters, Ruby Solar, Helen Billiot, Caroline Sauce and Gloria Oubre, all of Morgan City.

Bernie was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Alma Landry Anslum; two brothers, Jerry Anslum and Eddie Anslum; one sister, Laura Anslum Burke.
