Cleveland Joseph Ohmer Sr.

February 16, 1935 — January 18, 2022

Cleveland Joseph Ohmer, Sr., 86, a resident of Amelia, passed away on Tuesday, January 18, 2022 at Ochsner St. Mary in Morgan City, Louisiana.

Cleveland was born on February 16, 1935 in Bayou Chene in a house boat, the son of Philip Columbus Ohmer and Helen Mary Verret Ohmer. He was the 4th child born of 9 children.

Cleveland grew up on the Bayous of South Louisiana, making a living hunting, fishing, and trapping. He was a welder by trade and eventually became a USCG licensed Captain. He was a jack of all trades and did whatever was necessary to provide for his family. He drew the blueprints for his shrimp boat and built it with his sons. Unfortunately, every time he wanted to work on it, it would rain so he affectionately named it “Raindrops”. He helped build the Pogie Plant and the second story addition to J.S. Aucoin Elementary School in Amelia.

He married Shirley Ann Roy Ohmer when he was 19 years old in 1954. They raised 6 children in their home which was the converted houseboat he was born in. They shared their 11 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren and 5 great great grandchildren together.

He was a family man. He loved his family, and his grandchildren were his pride and joy. He would spend a lot of time passing along his knowledge and wisdom through jokes. He loved to make people laugh and he would always find the humor in anything. He loved old westerns movies and old country music. He would play the guitar, harmonica, and fiddle for his grandchildren.

He will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his wife of almost 67 years, Shirley Ann Roy Ohmer of Amelia; 2 daughters, Rita Chatsko and husband Micheal of Schriever, Phyllis Ann Ohmer of Thibodaux; 2 sons, Cleveland J. Ohmer, Jr. of Amelia, and Howard James Ohmer and wife Andrea’ of Amelia; 11 grandchildren: JoAnna, Billie, Bobbie, Cara, Ofelia Michelle, Jennifer, Steve, Leland, Taneka, Victor and Xavier; 17 Great Grand Children: Jordan, Tyler, Jayna Renee’, Lenox, Le’Vaun, Hunter, Darryn, Hailey, Abby, Kayla, Emily, Xander, Makiah, Mallory, Ethan, Hailey and Summer; 5 Great Great Grand Children: Lucas, Elisha, Archie, Avery, and Amirr; 4 Sisters: Lona Ohmer Pennison, Loretta Ohmer Tabor; Geneva Ohmer and Helen Faye Ohmer Benoit. 2 Godchildren, Christopher John Pennison and Todd Ashley Tabor; 1 bonus daughter, Donna Champagne; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Cleveland was preceded in death by his parents, Philip Columbus Ohmer and Helen Mary Verret Ohmer; his mother and father in law, Oliver Roy and Edna Comeaux Roy; paternal grandparents, Joseph B Ohmer and Olivia Mayon Ohmer; maternal grandparents, Etienne and Edna Bourgeois Verret; 1 brother, Huey John Ohmer Sr.; 2 sisters: Lucy Ohmer Tabor and Barbara Martha Ohmer Autin; 1 half-brother: Joseph Solar; 4 sisters in law: ONealia Henry Ragin, Rita Henry Roy, Nettie Verret Henry and Mary Lou Aucoin Ohmer; 8 brothers in law, Adam Henry, Howard Roy, Oliver “Joe” Roy, Earl Roy, Johnny Tabor, Sidney Tabor, Wilton Autin and Egbert Pennison; 2 sons, Michael Anthony Ohmer and Timothy John Ohmer; 3 grandsons, Jordan Joseph Mayon, Xavier John Ohmer and Jamie John Folse.
