Sandra Wiggins Messenger

June 25, 1944 — February 2, 2023

Sandra Ann Wiggins Messenger, native of Berwick and affectionately known as “Ganga”, 78, passed away peacefully at her home in Gonzales.

Sandra was born on June 25, 1944, in Berwick, the daughter of Harry Paul Wiggins and Annie Marie Vallet Wiggins.

Sandra was a devoted wife, mother, physical education teacher, and coach. She attended both Berwick High School and the University of Southwestern Louisiana. After graduating, Sandra began a career in high school education and later took time off to start her family. She soon returned to teaching as well as work in Adaptive P.E. In addition to her love of coaching, Sandra spent many devoted years as part of the St. Bernadette Altar Society as well as the St. Teresa of Avila Altar Society. In her later years, Sandra found a love for home health care. So many families found comfort in knowing that she cared for their loved ones near the end. Sandra will probably be best known for her love of gardening, satsumas, and of course, Minnie-ha-ha’s.

Sandra will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her children, AnMary Malaina Messenger, of Gonzales, Molly Jayne Messenger Moore and husband David of Saint Amant, and John Paul “J.P.” Messenger and wife Brienne of Gonzales; five grandchildren, Caitlin Messenger, Eric Willinger, Dathan Moore, Kenzie Gaudin, and Daniel Messenger. Sandra is also survived by two brothers, Harry Lee Wiggins and wife Ruth of Patterson, Farryl Wiggins and wife Renee of Bayou Vista, sister-in-law, Agatha of Bayou Vista, and brother-in-law, Warren Cothron, of Bayou Vista.

Sandra was preceded in death by her husband, John Dunham Messenger, one infant son, Daniel Wiggins Messenger, her father and mother, Harry Paul and Annie Vallet Wiggins, one brother, Terry Paul Wiggins, and one sister, Cynthia Wiggins Cothron.

A mass of Christian Burial will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Friday, February 17 th , 2023, at St. Bernadette Catholic Church in Bayou Vista with Father Thainese Alphonse celebrating mass. Remembrance will be held in the church beginning at 11:00 a.m. with a rosary being prayed at 11:30 a.m. Following mass, Sandra will be laid to rest at Morgan City Cemetery.
